Did You Know the Alhambra Was Almost Destroyed?

Few visitors know that in 1812, during the retreat of Napoleon’s troops from Granada, French soldiers planted explosives with the intention of destroying the Alhambra. Several towers were damaged, and one of the world’s most extraordinary monuments came dangerously close to disappearing forever.

Fortunately, history took a different turn thanks to the bravery of José García, a corporal of the Spanish Invalid Corps. Risking his own life, he managed to extinguish the fuses that had not yet exploded, preventing the complete destruction of the Alhambra.

Today, millions of visitors can admire this masterpiece thanks to his courageous act.

A commemorative plaque in his honour can still be found in the Plaza de los Aljibes, inside the Alhambra complex.

A small challenge for your visit

During your visit, try to find the plaque dedicated to José García and discover the story of the man who saved the Alhambra. Many visitors walk past it without realising they are standing in front of a piece of history.
